Rosa Liarte Alcaine is a Geography and History teacher and ICT coordinator at IES Caritma (proyectocartama.es) in Spain. Her main focus is Project-Based Learning and educational innovation. Before becoming a teacher, she was a professional skater, then became a national coach of the Mijas Club in artistic roller skating. Rosa has created a blog for her class called leccionesdehistoria.com which collects great innovative resources for students and teachers about history.

Repetitive Teaching

5 years ago, I had four courses of 4th ESO (15-16 years old students) where I taught the same classes. I was bored and didn’t feel challenged when I needed to explain the same material four times every morning. This was the reason why I decided to start recording my classes. I would record my first class in the morning, and then display the video in the classroom and share it with my students.

Solution

Capturing Explanations

I decided to use Explain Everything with my iPad to capture explanations. I had a lot of materials and PDFs with predesigned content that I had used before. I love Explain Everything because it lets me not only record but also edit the video in a simple way if I make a mistake. I can edit tracks and add recordings at any point. Suddenly, I had flipped my classroom and I started to record all my subject’s materials and publish them.

Nowadays, I use my iPad Pro and my Apple Pencil with an external microphone. I improved my videos, giving them a more personal touch and appearing in some parts of the video talking directly to my audience.

I love to use Explain Everything with my students too, working on problem-based learning. Very often we use Explain Everything together with Book Creator and make unique videos about different periods of history, which students find much more fun and engaging.
