We write with some important information about the near-term and the future of Explain Everything Classic, our original iPad app.
The original Explain Everything app (currently called Explain Everything Classic) was designed on the first iPad and iOS 3. In March 2015, we completed the launch of a new Explain Everything which was rebuilt from the ground up both to take better advantage of all of the native functions of new iPads and iOS while also being cross-compatible with other platforms (Chromebook, Android, Windows).
It was technically impossible to just update the existing app. We completely rewrote the draw tool, updated the file format (from .XPL to .explain) so that content can be used across devices and operating systems. If we tried to do an over-the-top update there was a likelihood of a lot of people’s existing content not displaying or working correctly.
Knowing the challenges of large, multi year deployments (and corresponding professional development and general familiarity with any new ecosystem), we didn’t want to force institutions who were in the middle of multi-year deployments to be without a choice when it came to the new version of the tool. We realize it makes things a little more complicated on the front end (multiple versions of the app in the store), but in the long term we feel like the decision has kept the decision making about which version of the app to use in the hands of institutions.
We of course love our original application, but we do have to be realistic and start planning to say good bye to Explain Everything Classic. We want to give PLENTY of advance notice about the changes that are coming. Here is how it is currently planned to go:
January 2017: Price Change 1
On or around January 18, 2017, Explain Everything Classic will be increased from $5.99 USD to $7.99. In the VPP store, for 20+ copies the price will increase from $2.99 to $3.99. Still less than a medium fancy coffee!
May 2017: Price Change 2
On or around May 1, 2017, Explain Everything Classic will be increased from $7.99 to $9.99 ($4.99 VPP – still less than a fancy coffee + cookie!).
September 2017: iOS 11 Comes out
Based on Apple’s iOS release schedule, we expect iOS 11 to be announced in the summer of 2017 and available in September, usually after the school has started in many northern hemisphere territories (and after winter recesses in southern hemispheres). Explain Everything Classic will be updated to be iOS 11 compatible.
January 2018: Explain Everything Classic rides off into the sunset
On or around January 1, 2018 Explain Everything Classic will no longer be available on the App Store. We’ll do our best to figure out ways to push critical bug fixes if they come up and allow deleted local copies of the app to be reinstalled, but that all depends on what Apple’s system will let us do. That is why we are providing this timeline WAY in advance so that you can plan accordingly.
The current iOS version of Explain Everything can be downloaded as a free, full-featured 30-day trial. After the trial has expired an annual subscription of $2.67 per user per year (minimum 5 users) is required. For educational institutions that are unable to purchase subscriptions (Explain Everything can be considered both an iPad app and a web-based service for those who have specific budget lines), we also provide the VPP version which is available as a one-time purchase for $15.99 (the equivalent of 3 years of subscription). This version does not allow the license to be transferred to other platforms.
We care tremendously about our users and hope that by sharing this information well in advance (and sometimes getting a bit technical), the effort reflects our intentions to be transparent as well as realistic.
